Words from Juan Espadas Cejas, Mayor of the city of Seville and CVA 2019 President
The 10th August of 1519, an expedition of five ships led by Magallanes departed from the Guadalquivir River. The city of Seville was marking a milestone in the Universal history with the achievement of one of the greatest successes of navigation, the first circumnavigation around the world by Magallanes and Elcano. The last one would bring back the “Nao Victoria” to the port of Seville three years later.
2019 is the commemoration of the fifth centenary of this milestone and the city is celebrating this milestone. Seville proudly welcomes the Presidency of the Ariane Cities Community as a great opportunity to prioritize and promote the aerospace sector of the city.
The Community of Ariane Cities was created in 1998 and is made up of a group of cities and other European companies linked to the aerospace industry. The aim of this CAC is, among others, to sensitize the general public about the importance of the space sector and disseminate the knowledge developed by the aerospace industry.
Seville belongs since 2012 to the Community of Ariane Cities, and it has worked together with other cities to try to get public and private investment and make the aerospace sector one of the engines of the Andalusian economy.
The CVA works from many angles to highlight the economic and social implications of European launcher programs and the technological progress they produce, highlight the importance of Europe having independent access to space, facilitate long-term cooperation between Ariane cities, its companies, space agencies, research institutes and different educational bodies, technical offer, cultural and educational programs and promote the strategic role of French Guiana and the Space Centre of Guyana (CSG), the European spaceport.
This project, which will be developed throughout 2019, will help not only to attract investments to Seville, to project internationally its business network or to raise funds from European projects, but also to contribute to inform all citizens about the benefits that derive from having space activity in our city, or positioning our city as a technological and innovative city compared to the rest of Europe.
The opportunity of this presidency of the Community of Ariane Cities also has its golden brooch with the holding of a Council of Ministers of the European Space Agency in our city, where important investments for the forthcoming years will also be discussed.
I would like to invite you all to come to Seville because I am convinced that justice is being done to the history of this city taking into account its universal vocation. We encourage all citizens, young and old people, professionals and amateurs to enjoy and take full advantage of all the activity that is taking place in 2019.
